Sheikh Mahmood Kibaate, the Deputy Supreme Mufti Kibuli Muslim faction has said singer Rema Namakula is still an official wife to fellow singer Eddy Kenzo according to Islam.
Recently, Rema dumped Kenzo with whom they have a daughter together and she went ahead to make it official with her new lover Dr Hamza Sebunya in a lavish ‘kukyala’ ceremony last week.
Days after the ceremony, the ‘Sitya Loss’ singer revealed that he performed nikkah [legal marriage in Islam] with Rema during the time they held a birthday party for their daughter Aamal, meaning that all this time they have been officially married, according to Islamic.
Appearing on Spark TV’s Livewire show on Monday, Sheikh Kibaate disclosed that if Kenzo’s allegation is true then Rema is still his wife.
“If they had nikkah, then Rema is still married to Kenzo and that means her new marriage is null and void,” Kibaate said.
He further advised both parties to divorce in an Islamic way if they want to move on.
“In Islam, a couple can agree to divorce but there are conditions that must be followed.
“When a divorce is initiated by the husband, it is known as talaq. The pronouncement by the husband may be verbal or written, and should only be done once. Since the husband is seeking to break the marriage contract, the wife has full rights to keep the dowry (mahr) paid to her. If the wife initiates a divorce, there are two options. In the first case, the wife may choose to return her dowry to end the marriage. She forgoes the right to keep the dowry since she is the one seeking to break the marriage contract,” noted Kibaate.
