Kaweesi murder suspects granted bail, rearrested

Security operatives have rearrested four suspects accused of being involved in the brutal assassination of former police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

The incident happened on Wednesday as the eight suspects in the murder case returned at the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kololo for their release orders to be signed.

Consequently four of them –  Jibril Kalyango, Yusuf Mugerwa, Joshua Kyambadde and Siraje Nyanzi – were asked to return home whereas the rest were taken back to prison because they have other charges to answer.

However, the lawyers of those freed sensed danger after security operatives in plain clothes surrounded court.

The lawyers then brought a vehicle, a Toyota Noah in which the four accused who had been released on bail were asked to sit to be driven out for fear of re-arrest.

“Meanwhile, the lawyers also got a Toyota Prado TX that was driven to hoodwink security operatives but the same didn’t come to pass. Security operatives used a van with private number plates to block the court premises exit,” a witness said.

The security operatives then picked the suspects bundled them into a waiting van then drove off.

This is not first time suspects in the same case have been rearrested by security even after being granted bail

In July 2019, Abdul Majid Ali Mugoya Byantuyo, a hawker, Faisal Dhikusooka Hibwagi Sinani, a peasant farmer and Abdul Kaala Tigasitwa, a chapatti maker were rearrested immediately after being granted bail by plain clothes security operatives.

In November 2017, Umar Baganda, Ahamada Senfuka, Hassan Tusiime, Ibrahim Kissa, Osman Mohamed Omarite, Hamidu Magambo, Abdu Majid, Sheikh Musa Ntende, Asuman Mugoya, Swalleh Ddamulira and Sauda Ayub were also rearrested by machine gun brandishing men.

These are all part of the 23 people accused of masterminding the murder of Kaweesi.

The former police mouthpiece was murdered along with his driver, Godfrey Mambewa and bodyguard, Kenneth Erau on March 17, 2017 in Kulambiro, a Kampala suburb a few meters from Kaweesi’s home.
