The Mufti of Uganda Shk. Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje has been re-elected the Executive Committee Member, as well as the World Governing Council Co-President of Religions for Peace International.

He was re-elected during the 10th Global Conference on Religion and Peace organised by Religions for Peace International last week on Lindau Island in Germany.

This was revealed by the Mufti during a press conference held on Wednesday at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Headquarters Old Kampala.

A total of 900 delegates from over 130 countries, representing different religions took part in the global conference aimed at empowering religious leaders as key players in peace building around the world.

The Mufti also retained his position as the co-chair of the African Council of Religious leaders along side the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja H.E John Cardinal Onaiyekan.

The Mufti described his re-election as an achievement for Uganda as a country.

“Through Religions for Peace International, Uganda is going to play a key role in world peace,” the Mufti said.

Religions for Peace International is the world’s largest and most representative multi-religious coalition that advances common action among the world’s religious communities for peace.

It works to transform violent conflict, advance human development, promote justice and harmonious societies, and protect the earth.

The global Religions for Peace network comprises a World Council of senior religious leaders from all regions of the world; six regional inter-religious bodies which include the African Council of Religious Leaders (ACRL) and more than 90 national ones which include the Inter Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU).

The ACRL is headquartered in Nairobi – Kenya while Religions for Peace International is headquartered at the UN Plaza in New York.

The Mufti also used the conference to condemn the rampant kidnaps and murders in the country.

He called upon the government to punish those behind these crimes, noting that it will serve as a serious warning to those with intentions to commit similar crimes.

He also condemned the xenophobic attacks in South Africa and called upon the leaders of South Africa to reign on those behind the attacks.

To the Ugandans living in South Africa, he urged them to be good ambassadors and avoid criminal acts.

The Mufti of Uganda who is also the current Inter-Religious Council (IRCU) President, congratulated the Bishop of Mityana Diocese Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu upon being elected the new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

He welcomed him to the IRCU council of Presidents, and commended the out going Archbishop His Grace Stanley Ntagali for his outstanding service to IRCU, the Church of Uganda and Uganda as a country.

The Mufti also urged journalists to pick interest in stories of peace noting that they are key players in peace building.

He appealed to them to report more on peace and dialogue initiatives like the National Dialogue Process which is being championed by the IRCU in collaboration with the government of Uganda and other stakeholders.
