The House of Bishops has elected Mityana Diocese’s Bishop Samuel Kazimba as the ninth Archbishop of Church of Uganda.

Now Archbishop-elect, the  57-year-old cleric from Kyagwe, Buikwe District replaces Stanley Ntagali who is set to retire in March 2020 after clocking the mandatory retirement age of 65. Archbishop Ntagali was elected and enthroned as Archbishop on December 16, 2012 at the age of 57, taking over from Henry Luke Orombi.

His successor will not officially become the Archbishop until he is installed at a ceremony on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe.

Kazimba was in contention for the top Church of Uganda post with Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa of Ankole Diocese, Bishop Samuel George Bogere Egesa from Bukedi, Bishop Alfred Olwa from Lango.

While addressing the press after his more than two thirds majority win, Kazimba said neither he nor the archdioceses of Mityana expected that he would be new Archbishop.

“It is God who chooses ordinary people to use them for extraordinary purpose. This is all by the God’s Grace,” he said.

He becomes the second archbishop from Buganda region after Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo.
