Police to charge their own for breaking Bobi Wine’s car window

Police will charge officers who shattered the window of a car belonging to Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

Last month, the Police stormed Kyagulanyi’s One Love Beach in Busabala in order to stop him from holding a press conference regarding the cancellation of his Kyarenga Extra Concert on Easter Monday.

According to witnesses, the Police asked Kyagulanyi to get out of his car a few metres to his facility. He, however, locked himself inside the car. Officers on the scene then started banging his window, until it broke, before spraying tear gas inside his car and on its occupants.

In the aftermath of incident, Police through Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango emphasized that such actions will happen in case one misbehaves.

However on Saturday, in a statement published on President Museveni’s website, the Commander In Chief condemned officers who broke Kyagulanyi’s car glass.

“I also disapprove of the method the Police used to break the glass of Bobi Wine’s car. They should have towed the vehicle to wherever they wanted him to be,” he said.

Following the condemnation, Police on Monday told journalists that all officers who were involved in the actions of breaking Kyagulanyi’s car glass will be charged before the Department of Professional Standards Unit (PSU).

“If the President condemns any vice within us, we must act. And for that matter, we are going to summon all officers who were involved in the operation,” said Police spokesman Fred Enanga at Police headquarters, Naguru.

He added that the officers used excessive force yet they had many options before reaching the decision of breaking Kyagulanyi’s car window glass.

“By the time we decide to break glass it is a matter of life and death. But Kyagulanyi and his colleagues were in a normal condition. The option was to use a breakdown and tow his car to everywhere they wanted. I can’t tell why they resorted to breaking yet all the time we have been towing their cars up to where we need them to be,” Enanga added.
