Rwanda’s duo Charly Na Nina have cancelled their appearance at Kampala show citing security reasons.
The duo, famous for ‘Owooma’ were slated to perform in Kampala in a show dubbed ‘Unplugged’ on May 1 together with vocalist Geosteady.
Nina Muhoza, one half of the duo confirmed the news to turn down the invite to the Labour Day gig in Kampala.
“We have already cancelled the gig we had in Uganda in May over security reasons. Instead we are much focusing on our upcoming UK tour,” Nina said in an interview.
Rwanda recently issued a notice warning its citizens not to travel to Uganda due to incidents of Rwandans being kidnapped and tortured in Uganda.
This is not the first time Rwandan artistes cancel shows in Uganda.
In December 2018, Rwandan singer based in America The Ben cancelled the show he had been contracted to in Uganda at last minute.
Charly Na Nina have made successful shows and won awards in Uganda in previous years as well as working with Ugandan artistes such as Geosteady Sheebah Karungi and Bebe Cool.
The Uburyohe singers are slated to perform in UK early September on the same stage with Uganda’s comedian Alex Muhangi and Kenya’s Eric Omondi.
The duo courted controversy last year when they were replaced by fellow Rwandan artiste Bruce Melodie on a collaboration, ‘Embeera zo’ they had earlier recorded with Ugandan dancehall star Sheebah Karungi after the girl duo and the Ugandan star failed to agree on the collaboration.
Both versions of the song were released and according to sources, Sheebah was not happy after Charly na Nina failed to prioritise the project, and instead chose to focus on their collaboration with Bebe Cool, dubbed ‘I do’, forcing her to replace them.
Nina confirmed that they had worked on the collaboration with Sheebah but did not get any formal communication as to why they were removed from the song.
The girls said that due to their busy schedule, they could not remain in Kampala to work on a video. Sheebah was reportedly not impressed.
It was not the first time Sheebah collaborated with a Rwandan artiste. Her collaboration with The Ben ‘Binkolera’ won her a legion of fans in Rwanda.
