Bright Stars got more than they deserved – Villa coach Bamweyana

SC Villa head coach, Douglas Bamweyana feels that their Wednesday evening opponent’s Bright Stars picked up more than what they played for during their game in the Uganda Premier league at the Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

“Our opponent didn’t deserve a point because they were not on the same level as us. The only ball they put into our net is the only goal they deserved and scored against us because we were sloppy and we could have dealt with that situation,” Bamweyana said post-match.

SC Villa and Bright stars played to a 1-all draw but Bamweyana and Villa feel they were undone by what they believed was poor officiating from the match officials.

Bashir Mutanda picked up a long ball in the 41st minute from defender Asuma Halishe to put Villa into the lead as he scored his 11th goal for the season but their celebrations were short lived. Three minutes later left back Dan Birikwala’s cut back found Alfred Onek inside the area to restore parity.

Villa thought that they had taken the lead in the 56th minute when Mutanda scored from substitute Ssemujju’s clever delivery but the flag was already up. We have the privilege of a replay but the assistant made the right call of flagging for offside.

The decision to cancel the goal as well as the referee awarding Bright Stars a throw in instead of Villa did not go down well with Bamweyana and Villa fans who had clearly grown frustrated. The fans turned rowdy and start pulling out seats from the pavilion and beer bottles and hurled them towards the pitch in protest. The game was stopped as the fans were calmed down by the Uganda Police and Bamweyana.

“The officials did not do justice today, they were unfair. We had a goal wrongly disallowed – May be am speaking out of emotions but that is my opinion,” Bamweyana said after the match.

He then went on to analyze his side’s performance claiming that the opponents were aided by his side’s failure to use the chances they created

“The result is frustrating and I am not happy with the way we handled some situations as I feel we should have done better. We failed to convert the chances we created and clearly we are still poor in the final third but we shall have to work on it”. Bamweyana continued.

The Jogoo are now 12th on the log with 15 points and ahead of Maroons by goal difference. Bright Stars remain 9th with 22 points ahead of the visit by KCCA. Villa will travel to Kitende to face rivals SC Vipers.
