BoU probe: ULS in support of Katuntu tenure extension

Concurring with Kadaga, ULS President Simon Peter Kinobe has said Katuntu and his Deputy Anita Among (Bukedea Woman MP) have nearly completed the probe and any interruption now would scale back the progress registered in the investigation.

Uganda Law Society (ULS) has backed Speaker Rebecca Kadaga’s move to extend the tenure of the leadership for the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) until it finishes the Bank of Uganda probe.

While addressing journalists in her chambers on Thursday, Kadaga said Bugweri County Member of Parliament Abdu Katuntu and team should be given time to have their job done.

“I am the Speaker of the house, head of the institution and my proposal is good for the institution and the country. Parliament does work for the country not political parties,” Kadaga said.

The current Cosase leadership is supposed to handover office on January 13 but the Speaker wants their tenure extended up to the end of February.

Concurring with Kadaga, ULS President Simon Peter Kinobe has said Katuntu and his Deputy Anita Among (Bukedea Woman MP) have nearly completed the probe and any interruption now would scale back the progress registered in the investigation.

“The interruption renders the invested resources into this process so far to be a waste yet the time needed for them to produce a report is not that long,” he said.

On Wednesday, Opposition Chief Whip Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda insisted that the rules don’t allow them to extend Katuntu’s tenure.

He said though Katuntu and his team have done a commendable job, they should accept the fact that their term has come to an end and hand over office peacefully.

“Katuntu should hand over to Mubarak Munyagwa (Kawempe South MP) either with an interim or partial report and help/ guide him complete the process pointing our areas they have not touched,” Ssemujju urged, in echoing the leader of Opposition in Parliament Betty Ochan Aol.
