Uganda Police Force on Thursday foiled an attempted fraud by two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and three other men masquerading as Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials.
The incident that took place at Dewinton Drive opposite Spear House, involved two army vehicles.
According to UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, Lt. Col Deo Akiiki, the suspects wanted to fleece Indian investors of taxes. He says the victims deal in computers under a company known as Mitsumi Computer Garage Ltd.
“One driver identified as Cpl Isoke was apprehended and now under police custody while his accomplice is on the run. Also on the run are three suspects purportedly working with the tax collection body who have made it a routine to extort money from these investors,” said Akiiki in a press statement.
The army mouthpiece also revealed that police managed to impound 13 computers that had been loaded on the army pickup purportedly due to the company’s failure to pay taxes.
“Also found at the scene were, Uganda Revenue Authority seals and documents related to tax collection,” he said, adding, “We are working together with the Uganda Police Force, URA and the owners of the warehouse to arrest the other remaining culprits on the run and bring the whole group to book.”
This not the first time, bad elements in the army are getting involved in such acts.
In October, some officers were arrested after a foiled armed robbery. They were found with an assortment of both Military and Police stores were recovered from the suspects including an AK 47 Number UG-POL 46016976-15257 belonging to Uganda Police Forces with 29 rounds
