The protection of the independence of the judiciary and promotion of the rule of law will not be begged for but these are issues clearly stated in the constitution.
This has been disclosed by the Chief justice of Uganda Bart Katureebe while addressing the public in the Ben Kiwanuka memorial lecture at the Kampala high court gardens in Kampala urging all the three branches of government and citizens to observe the constitution and stay away from reducing this body to beggars through denying it resources to do its work.
Katureebe adds that they will not ballow to be untwisted and and alleged blackmailed.
The late Benedict Kiwanuka was kidnapped on21st of september1972 violently kidnapped from his High Court chambers and his body has never been traced , presumed to have been murdered by President Idi Amin Dada’s regime.
Katureebe further noted how this lecture under the theme “the enduring legacy of Benedict Kiwanuka reflections on the past present and future of the administration of justice,” is a challenge for all stake holders to reflect on the current situation in the country.
‘’when we demand for resources from government or parliament we are not begging and we don’t want be reduced to beggars’’,said katureebe.
Former Chief Justice Emeritus Simon Wako Wambuzi also noted how the country has registered progress in the Judiciary from Amin’s error to the current NRM regime but however wondered whether the body has reached the independent legacy Benedict Kiwauka died for.
