Government has applauded all patriotic health workers who remained at their work stations to save lives of Ugandans after denouncing the ongoing strike which commenced on Monday.
Addressing the media on the current medical workers strike at Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng thanked medical workers who endeavored to treat patients irrespective of strike challenge.
She however, faulted some doctors who are taking part in the industrial action yet the engagements were still underway.
Ms Aceng appealed to all striking medical officers to return to work immediately as government completes the salary harmonization exercise.
“Government appeals to all medical Doctors to return to work immediately as their concerns are being addressed,” said the minister.
Meanwhile, the minister revealed that in the new Public Service pay policy, intern doctors and Senior House Officers are not included in the process since they are not under formal government employment.
“Intern Doctors are trainee Doctors who are not under formal employment and therefore are paid an allowance and not a salary. Senior House Officers are post-graduate students in training, although some may be in formal employment by Government under study leave,”
On Monday doctors under their umbrella body,Uganda Medical Association (UMA) declared a sit down strike.
Doctors want the government to increase salaries and duty allowances of health professionals, review the supply chain and management of medicines, vaccines and medical supplies, as well as disband the State House Medicine and Health Service Delivery Monitoring Unit.
