The Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura on Thursday launched the annual Uganda Police Week, in Katabi Entebbe in Wakiso District.
The event is held every year with emphasis normally on strengthening community based police.
This year’s Police week will be running under the theme; ‘Connecting with communities to fight crime.’
The event will be running up to 3rd October 2017 and will be closed by President of Uganda HE. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The Police force has been since 2014 pushing for October 3rd to be designated as the National Police Day, where it celebrates its achievements in fighting crime and bringing the public closer.
Speaking at the event launch, Gen Kale Kayihura reassured the residents of Katabi town council, who in the past weeks have been hit by back to back murders of women, that the Police has developed new measures that are expected to end the craze.
Kayihura said his force had finally established that the recent murders in the area are organized crimes of passion.
“Some of these murders are a result of other issues which we, as investigators need to develop before mentioning out to the public,” he said.
He said he was currently working on strengthening neighborhood watch as well as increasing deployment in the area.
“We have increased on the number of policemen in Katabi on foot patrol, motorcycles and patrol cars, who will be coordinating with crime preventers together with LC chairpersons to monitor security straight from the grass root level,” he said.
Police is also to introduce other forms of patrols like roller skaters, bicycles and call centers in each ward in Katabi where people will be given specific telephone numbers to report all forms of insecurity in their area.
