The second edition of the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (Wash) media awards has been announced.

Minister of Water and Environment Sam Cheptoris launched the awards round at the Ministry’s head offices in Luzira, a suburb of Kampala on the shores of Lake Victoria.

The awards gala is expected t o take place on October 6.

The inaugural WASH media awards took place at Sheraton hotel and a total of seven journalists were awarded for their work in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector. They got accolades and cash prizes.

The awards will see competition among practicing print, television, radio and online media professionals and freelance.

Awards organizers say, winners are those journalists who excel in reporting in water, sanitation and hygiene topics.

The Uganda Wash Media awards initiative is a collective sector aimed at recognising and encouraging excellence among the media fraternity in raising awareness on the importance of WASH.

The minister said there is still a problem of raising awareness about WASH issues, which he blames for the greatest burden of diseases.

“33% of Ugandans don’t have access to clean and safe water,” said the minister, adding that 21% of Ugandans have no toilet and therefore practiced open defecation.

The deadline for submission of entries is September 11, 2017, at 5pm.

The awards are supported by the ministry of water and environment, Water Aid, SNV, Unicef, UWASNET, Handwashing secretariat, Plan International, Water Mission, IRC, Amref Africa, Water for People and Hai Agency.
