A disgruntled father is in search for his son, an activist who has been missing for over years now.
Joseph Namugera, a resident of Lusango Village in Kalungu district says, his son Luswata Hannington was last seen in July 2021 at Makindye Kampala according to his friends.
Its alleged that since last year Luswata, was having unidentified and suspicious people trailing him almost on a daily basis.
“My Son complained to me that some people were always following him around. We last heard of him September 2021 until now.
”I have a feeling that he was kidnapped.” one time he told me that his life was in danger because of supporting the National Unity Platform Boss Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu who was also the opposition candidate in 2021 elections” Namugera said.
He added that his son was staying with his colleague Muwanga Henry who was abducted on 8th April 2021 from his home and Shakib Sembatya who was also picked from his shop in Kampala city Centre by a drone vehicle and Luswata managed to escape until now no one knows his whereabouts.
Luswata was among NUP activists who were mobilizing people to support NUP in Makindye Division with the aim of recruiting youth into subversive activities with an aim of overthrowing the sitting government, according to inside sources in security.
Namugera further cried out to the state that they should set his son free if in case they are the ones holding him.
“My son should be set free because he is innocent. Belonging to an opposition party does not make him a criminal,” he pleaded.
Luswata’s disappearance comes at a time when the cases of rampant kidnap, torture and detention without trial by security are on a rise in Uganda.
A good number of opposition supporters especially those of NUP are rotting in jail due to their political affiliation.
Recently, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine vowed not to hold dialogue with President Yoweri Museveni for the sake of setting free all political prisoners.
“In Uganda, rule of law is no longer respected many of our brothers and sisters are in jail but they did nothing, their crime is that they supported us. But we shall never be compromised and seat on the same table and beg Mr Museveni to set free Ugandans he has incarcerated for nothing,”the former presidential candidate said.
He added that when he was incarcerated, no one sat with President Museveni to set him free but it was the pressure from Ugandans and the western countries that made him (Museveni) and his men to set him free.
In the same way, he said Ugandans must put pressure on the state so that it releases the political prisoners without any dialogue.
“I would have been dead, and the state was not willing to set me free but it was your power that set me free.So let’s not get compromised to the extent of begging Mr Museveni to set free our people who are innocent. The laws are very clear, let them be taken to court if they committed any crimes,” he said.
