Mozambique First Lady commends Uganda on improving health services

MULAGO HOSPITAL, KAMPALA: H.E Dr. Isaura Ferrao Nyusi the first lady of Mozambique has today visited Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal hospital (MSWNH) and commended the government of Uganda for its efforts in improving the health of women and children.

“I commend the government of Uganda for respecting the health of the women and children and other unprivileged persons through providing them with the improved health services. We have learnt a lot from the visit and will definitely borrow a leaf for sustainable health development,” she said.

Mrs Nyusi who is the patron of the Model Maternity and Wards certification in Mozambique, an initiative of the Ministry of Health of Mozambique.

Dr. Isaura Ferrao Nyusi who was received by the Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth and Dr. Evelyn Nabunya- Executive Director Mulago Women Hospital and her medical staff was guided on a tour of the Radiology Department, Laboratory and Diagnostic area, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

While at Intensive Care Unit for premature babies, the First Lady Nyusi was shown how the premature babies are catered for and Kangaroo style (were mothers put their premature babies in the chest for better growth and protection).

She was further led to a ‘Wall of Hope’ displaying pictures of babies who were born prematures and now are living examples including quadruplets.

During the tour, Dr. Evelyn Nabunya informed Mrs Nyusi that the hospital offers different specialized services including; Antenatal Clinic, Benign Gynaecology, Uro-gynaecology, Gyn-oncolgy, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Fluoroscopy, Mamography, Ultra Sound, Family planning, Kangaroo follow-up clinic, Cervical Cancer Screening, Immunisation, Postnatal Clinic, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kangaroo Mother Care, Operation theatres, Intensive Care Unit, High Dependence Unit, Labour Suites, among others.

Earlier Dr. Isaura Ferrao Nyusi held a bilateral meeting with the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni at State House Entebbe during which they discussed various issues in the sectors of education, health and environmental conservation. She appreciated President Museveni and his wife Janet Kataaha Museveni for the opportunity to visit the hospital and Kalangala Islands and for warmly welcoming them in Uganda.

Hon. Jane Ruth Jane Ocero the Minister of Health said they are honoured that their short visit to Uganda H.E Dr. Isaura Ferrao Nyusi chose to visit the health sector and appreciated her for that decision.

She said that the maternal mortality of Uganda is still high at 336 per 100,000 live births, but it has come down from a hike of cover 500 per 100,000. She said their vision is to bring it to a target of sustainable development goals. She revealed this year we set a target of 120 per 100,000.

Present at the guided tour were Hon. Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, Minister of State Northern Uganda, Dr. Henry G. Mwebesa, Director General Ministry of Health, Dr. Charles Olaro, represented Chairperson Board Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital and Dr. Evelyn Nabunya- Executive Director Mulago Women Hospital. The delegation from Mozambique included H.E Josefina Mpelo, Minister of Combatants, Lady Lucinda Espirito Santo, the first lady’s aide, among others.
