Somalia vs Uganda 4pm StarTimes Stadium Lugogo

Group A leaders Uganda Cranes are in contention for a second win in a row as they face winless Somalia today, Monday, December 9 on match day three of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The Cranes, the most successful team in the region with 14 titles, cruised  to 2-1 win against Burundi Swallows in their first game while Somalia shared points with Djibouti after a goalless draw.

Somalia meanwhile, have never worked passed the group stages of this competition.

The Cranes eliminated Somalia earlier this year 7-2 on aggregate in the preliminary qualifying round for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship in a home and away contest to qualify for the  next round that saw Uganda over take Burundi hence qualifying.

Somalia has not had a win over Uganda in the last 17 matches losing 14 and drawing 3.

These two teams have met 21 times before but still Uganda stands out wining 16 while Somalia managed 2 wins and the 3 games ended in a stalemate.

The last time Somalia won against Uganda was a 2-0 win in 1973, a win that came in  the first leg of the preliminary round for the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. But their smiles were short lived as Uganda swept them 5-0 in the second leg and Uganda progressed 5-2 on aggregate hence knocking out  Kenya and Algeria 3-1 and 3-2 respectively to qualify to the final tournament.

Their last meeting in this competition was in 2011 in Tanzania, Uganda won 4-0 hence Somalia losing all the group matches while Uganda lifted the trophy for the 12th time.

Somalia’s goal keeper Said Awes Alis had an impressive performance in their game against Djibouti with his saves that kept the team to hold on for a point. He needs to keep the same form if he should stop the Cranes Talisman Fahad Bayo who almost scores at will in addition to Airtel FUFA Awards contestants of Bright Anukani and Allan Okello.

Group A standings
1.Uganda 3pts
2.Djibouti  1pt
3. Somalia 1 pt
4. Burundi 0 pts
5. Eritrea 0 pts
