Derby Day: Old rivals KCCA, Villa lock horns in Uganda Premier League

Mike Mutebi is expected to return to the dugout at the StarTimes Stadium as defending champions host old rivals SC Villa in their second last, first round fixture of the 2019-20 Premier League.

Today’s epic clash between the two giants of Ugandan football will be the 19th since January 2011, with KCCA having won eight while Villa has managed a paltry two.

Villa are the most successful team in the league, having bagged 16 titles, three more than KCCA have.

However, the visitors have not won any title since 2004.

On Tuesday, Mutebi was left behind following his late arrival at the pickup center as his team travelled to Mbarara.

Then, the Kasasiro Boys lost 2-1 to Mbarara City.

In a prematch presser, the gaffer apologized and showed willingness to serve any extra punishment from the club though he said the loss on Tuesday, which saw them slump to fourth on the 16-team log,  was not because of his absence on the bench.

He argued that the technical bench that was in Mbarara had equally enough ability to handle the match but Mbarara City always proved tougher while playing against KCCA in previous matches.

Unlike Mutebi’s charges, SC Villa had a successful trip to Arua, thumping the hosts Onduparaka FC 1-3 earlier in the week to move to third, one point above KCCA on 27 points from 14 games, seven and two points behind log leaders Vipers and Bul FC respectively.

In fact, Villa’s form has been impressive, having lost only one game – to newly promoted Kyetume on the opening day of the season – of the 14 league games played so far.

Their record at KCCA however, stands at zero wins out of nine games, garnering just four points in the process.

Last season, KCCA defeated SC Villa 4-2 and 3-2 away from home.

A win for either side will confirm a better first round position on either side.

KCCA shall be boosted by the return of Allan Okello, Mustafa Kizza and Nicholas Kasozi who are now fully having missed the previous game due to fatigue, injury, and sickness respectively.  Jackson Nunda, Peter Magambo, Jurua Hassan, Sadam Juma, and Sadat Anaku are still tenants in the club’s sick bay.

Villa on the other hand has confirmed that Allan Kabonge will be absent.
