Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Smart City Village Ambassadors on Thursday resolved to get rid of garbage wastes in the City and its environs. This was resolved in a meeting of Kampala City Mayors, Councilors and Village Smart City Ambassadors from the five Divisions; comprising Kampala City. They include; Kampala Central, Rubaga, Kawempe, Nakawa and Makindye Divisions.
Ms. Dorothy Kisaka, KCCA Executive Director, while addressing the mammoth crowd of Smart City Ambassadors Forum, said there are 857 Villages in Kampala, out of which each Village and each Division has a Smart City office and representative. She said the days of dumping garbage to Kiteezi Landfill are gone, and now the Smart City representatives in each village shall be required to collect and sort out garbage according to the bio digestible or organic garbage, hard material, plastics and bottles.
“KCCA intends to turn the decomposing wastes into fertilizer and electricity, whereas the plastics and other hard materials can be recycled to useful products”, she said.
Ms. Kisaka said Kiteezi Landfill, which recently claimed the lives of hundreds of people, has been in existence for 28 years, serving as a garbage dumping site for Kampala city and Wakiso District.
“KCCA has also put in place Smart City Waste Bins to reduce littering of waste products, in addition to promoting greening campaigns, where flowers and grass is being planted along street roads and walkways to reduce dust particles and smarten the city”, she added.
She in addition said KCCA intends to purchase 150 Hectares of Land, for garbage treatment and recycling, which should not be beyond 30KM from the City proximity.
“The Project to turn waste garbage into fertilizers and electricity or recycling of plastics into useful products will take KCCA not more than two years from to date”, she told journalists in an interview.
Mr.Salim Uhuru, the Kampala Central Mayor and National Resistance (NRM) Chairman for Kampala, speaking on behalf of other City Mayors, said the Smart City campaign is within the NRM Manifesto to put Kampala City to modern standards. He said all Mayors in the five Divisions of Kampala City are behind Ms. Dorothy Kisaka, in her endeavors to realize the Kampala Smart City dream.
