Uganda Police on Monday transferred 54 senior police officers to different stations across the country in a move aimed at redeeming the tainted image of the force as well as improving service delivery.
The transfers took immediate effect according a message to all units issued by the director in charge of Human Resource and Administration AIGP Moses Balimwoyo on October 15.
Among the affected is, Assistant Superintendent of Police Joseph Bakaleke Gwaido who has been the DPC for the Central Police Station in Kampala has been transferred to Kiryandongo as DPC.
Bakaleke has been a popular figure in Kampala well known for leading operations that neutralize protests in the city.
Others transferred include Superintendent of Police, Jackson Mucunguzi, formerly in charge of Makerere University police station. His new duty station is Jinja Road police station where he will sit in the DPC’s office. Superintendent of Police Bernard Akankwasa has has been moved from Katonga Region to Kampala Metropolitan South as Deputy Regional Police Commander.
In 2017 during burial of slain Police Spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi President Yoweri Museveni directed Gen. Kale Kayihura, then Police head, to clean up the Police Force, which he said had been infiltrated by criminals.
“Kale clean up your house,” the President said.
Having failed to clean up the house, Gen. Kayihura was in March 2018 dropped by the President and later arrested and accused of abuse of office.
