Newly elected local council one and two chairmen, their executives and youth leaders in Nakisunga sub-county have begun a two-week ‘chakamchaka’ (basic military skills and political education) to keep them abreast with national patriotism requirements.
This was on Thursday disclosed by Mukono Resident District Commissioner Haji Nasser Munuulo while representing Mukono North MP and state minister for water Ronald Kiuule at the sports day for Kyabakadde Church of Uganda Primary School in Kyampisi sub-county.
He also disclosed that his office has invited lawyers from the Justice Centre to offer free legal services to poor residents oppressed by land grabbers, and those who have overstayed at police stations without being produced in courts of law.
Munuulo said that the team of lawyers have been given a desk in his office, and appealed to all those falling in the above categories to approach them at no cost.
On the rampant cattle thefts in the area, the RDC advised leaders, through the sub-county chairman’s office, to organize a general meeting with residents and jointly devise ways of containing the issue.
He was however displeased with some residents who bribe police to release suspected thieves because they are sons of the area and, without mentioning names, said that he has several times prevailed on police personnel to produce the suspects in court for justice to take its course.
“You also need to realize that although accessing police bond is every citizen’s right, you sometimes stand as sureties for people with questionable background who disappear on being released, which frustrates efforts to deal with them in the set just manner”, he cautioned.
The LC 3 chairman for Kyampisi Ibrahim Kabambwe reported that the sub-county has only one government-aided secondary school, with students travelling long distances to get there, and appealed to the RDC to lobby for more schools.
He also reported that many primary schools lack facilities like kitchens, classrooms, pit latrines and other basic necessities, and singled out Sittankya and Kiwumu primary schools where he said, teachers and pupils share latrines.
Kabambwe expressed appreciation to government for stepping up road fund by fifty percent, which he said is bound to drastically improve the sub-county’s road network.
