Uganda: Anti-cancer drugs to be manufactured locally

Cancer patients in Uganda will soon be saved from the high cost treatment after Rene Industries Limited, a local pharmaceutical company revealed plans of manufacturing anti cancer drugs locally.

Today Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde paid a visit to Rene Industries Ltd at Kamuli village, Kireka parish in Kira Town Council. The Pharmaceuticals industry is one of the #BUBU priority sectors. According to the management of the industry, they are already undertaking a feasibility study to start manufacturing anti cancer drugs.

The facility which is estimated to cost between $8m – $10m is expected to be established in the next 5 years. Currently, Rene industries produces 110 pharmaceutical products including tablets, capsules, liquid orals, dry syrup and many others.

Hill Water

The medicine is sold locally and some exported in the East African Community (EAC) and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The factory employs 400 people.

Minister Amelia Kyambadde promised to support the company to access a wider market in the COMESA region.
