Cabinet has passed a resolution backing the holding of a referendum on the extension of the Presidential term of office from five to seven years.
While speaking to a local Television on Friday evening, Chris Baryomunsi, state minister for Housing established that cabinet has approved the decision to hold a referendum.
“We shall have to undertake a referendum to ask people of Uganda to harmonize the term of the president with that of the rest of government and this has been discussed in cabinet and later in the year it [referendum] will be held,” Baryomunsi said.
He added that prior to the referendum, there will be discussions between the relevant departments and electoral commission to agree on when the exercise will be undertaken.
Last year on 20 December, parliament voted to lift the term limits on the presidency, reinstated term limits in the Uganda constitution and extended the term of Members of Parliament and president from five to seven years.
