A group of 400 ex- Crane Bank employees have dragged DFCU Bank to High Court seeking shs6 billion as compensation for being illegally dismissed.
The workers who include managers, tellers and cleaners say they were laid off in January this year out of discrimination.
The deputy registrar in charge of civil matters Sarah Langa allowed 10 ex-Cranes Bank employees to file a representative suit on behalf of their colleagues in same situation.
The employees demand that DFCU compensates them for the mental anguish and damages to their reputation and finances as a result of this wrongful termination.
Bank of Uganda sold Crane Bank to DFCU Bank taking all its assets although the central bank wants businessman Sudhir Ruparelia to pay all liabilities of the bank. Sudhir has put up a strong defense in the commercial court, demanding to know how much Crane Bank was sold since he has never known the details of the transaction.
Crane Bank workers suffered another blow when the new bank owner laid them off despite assurances from the Central Bank Governor Tumusiime Mutebile that their jobs were secure and that no of them would lose their jobs.
Unfortunately, all the 400 Crane Bank staff were dismissed by the new management and the Central bank didn’t come to their aid.
