Today 11th September 2017, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and Makerere University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the collaboration of two constituent Colleges of Health Sciences and College of Veterinary medicine, animal resources and biosecurity.
The signing took place at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters at Mbuya hill in Kampala.
The MoUs signed are aimed at building synergies to strengthen quality of health care and mitigate health threats to public health security as key competencies of each party.
The UPDF health workers and biosecurity officers will improve knowledge and skills in research methods, respond to epidemics and natural disasters under this undertaking. The collaboration will also benefit the UPDF in capacity building, strengthening health systems and enhancing epidemic response preparedness.
The Minister of State for Veteran Affairs Hon Lt Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama, who was the Chief Guest thanked the delegation from Makerere University Development for the willingness and zeal the higher institution of learning has demonstrated over time to help the UPDF to bridge the gaps in serving the officers and men of UPDF and their families throughout the country.
The minister reiterated MODVA/UPDF-Makerere University collaboration as feeding directly into the common national research agenda that will help Uganda attain the national Development plan and Vision 2040 and promises hus ministry’s full support.
Prof Banabas Nawangwe the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, thanked the MODVA/UPDF leadership for its commitment towards keeping peace in the country and noted that the University had already been involved in similar ventures citing the involvement of college of humanities which has been conducting trainings to the UPDF staff in Kimaka, designing the hospital at Bombo. He added that the two institutions can do a lot together since there is heavy investment in Makerere University to give back to the country through collaborations.
