After the exit of Brian Gouldie, MTN Uganda has turned to Airtel for a new chief executive to lead Uganda’s franchise.

The new CEO is Wim Vanhelleputte, who has been the managing director of Airtel in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Vanhelleputte has been on the job in Kinshasa for hardly five months.

However, Vanhelleputte  is not new to MTN as he has previously worked for the South African telecom giant in Cote d’Ivoire.

The new MTN boss joined the Ugandan market which at present is competitive and MTN’s dominance is threatened by new comers in the data and mobile money business.

Quick CV

Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte has been Managing Director of DRC at Bharti Airtel Limited since February 2016. Mr. Vanhelleputte served as an Executive Director for Key Business Unit Within Africa at Bharti Airtel Limited since July 2015. Mr. Vanhelleputte is responsible for Bharti Airtel’s strategic business unit comprising Gabon, Congo B, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Madagascar and the Seychelles. Mr. Vanhelleputte served as the Chief Executive Officer at MTN Cote d’Ivoire SA since April 2009. Mr. Vanhelleputte served as Chief Executive Officer of Tchad, a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E.
