The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Director General Frank Bamwesigye has said that the expansion work of the Entebbe International airport has hit 56 per cent.
Entebbe airport currently receives over 3 million people in a year, in order to improve on the service delivery, CAA launched an expansion project in 2015 with a scheduled completion date of 2023 for the first phase and 2033 for the whole project being done at a cost of Shs739bn by China Communication Construction Company, the firm that built the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway.
During an inspection tour on Saturday, Bamwesigye told journalists that the project is on moving well as scheduled in the plan and it’s expected to get finished in December (first phase).
The first phase of the airport expansion is expected to be completed by may in 2021.
“Tax way alpha is at 66 per cent, tax way extension is almost finished only waiting for the completions Cargo apron, in phase one, starting from one step to five have been completed, step six is underway and is expected to be finished by the end of next month,” he said.
He added that access road is 91 per cent to be completed, the service road is 62 per cent, landside area at 52 per cent, commercial centre design is underway and is expected to completed by the end of this month.
Aircraft packing apron four it’s overall progress is at 47 per cent and the first half is expected to be completed by the end of this month, the whole apron is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Aircraft parking apron two is at 28 per cent and the construction of the VIP is also ongoing.
When the construction is done according to Bamwesigye service delivery will be eased.
According to Vianney Luggya, the Public Affairs Manager CAA, the project has always been disrupted by bad weather conditions. On Saturday CAA official invited journalists to inspected the ongoing work.
