Our people at the border are suffering – Katuna border post Mayor

The Katuna town council Mayor Nelson  Nshangabasheija has said the people who live at the Katuna border post need Rwanda-Uganda border issues resolved in order to return their lives back to normal.

According to Nshangabasheija, the border post that was closed in late February has crippled all forms of trade and has turned Rwandans at the border into destitute. He was speaking on Wednesday afternoon at Kigezi College Butobere, in Kabale during a meeting of NRM party leaders ahead of President Museveni’s visit to Kabale later this month.

Rwanda closed its borders with Uganda, accusing Uganda of arresting, detaining and torturing innocent Rwandans living in Uganda.

Kigali also accused Uganda of harboring her enemies, of which Uganda categorically denied.

President Museveni earlier this month met his Rwandan and Congolese counterparts in Angolan capital, Luanda to discuss regional security.

Nshangabasheija also called on the Ndorwa West Member of Parliament David Bahati to request President Museveni to address the people of Kabale about the matter and maybe reassure them that the borders would be reopened. Since border closure, the famous Katuna town has now turned into a ghost town with several businessmen leaving for Kampala,Malaba or to South Sudan for pastures new.

Museveni to Kabale

President Museveni is scheduled to be in Kabale on July 31. According to Bahati, Museveni will be in Kabale to spread the gospel of Operation Wealth Creation and poverty eradication in the country.

He will meet all district stakeholders from Kigezi sub region who will all be gathered in Kabale town.

President Museveni has been holding regional tours across the country in the 16 sub regions of the country.
