The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has started the recruitment of 1,300 Local Defence Unit (LDU) in a bid to enhance security across the country.
The 17-day exercise, barely four months after 6000 LDUs were recruited, will take place in Central, Eastern, Northern and mid-Western Uganda has started on Monday, July 15.
The Kampala metropolitan area, which covers Wakiso, Kampala and Mukono, they will recruit 3,000 LDUs.
“The recruitment is aimed at enhancing the existing foundation security arrangement in the country to ensure the people and their property are secured at grassroots levels,” UPDF land forces spokesperson Lt. Col. Henry Obbo.
Some of the requirements needed to join include a national identity card, medical fitness, primary and O-level qualifications and a clean criminal record.
Those recruited will be trained in basic military skills and then deployed in their respective districts.
In Kampala, recruitments will take place in Wankulukuku (Rubaga division), Old Kampala Secondary School (Kampala Central), Kampala Capital City Authority grounds for Nakawa Division, Kutano playground in Kawempe and the Kibuli Police Primary school playground for Makindye Division.
