UPL: URA, Vipers and league champs KCCA record away victories

Match day 29 of the Uganda Premier League ended with easy away victories for the top three teams.

All eyes were on the juicy fixture between URA and Police FC at the Star Times Stadium in Lugogo as URA continued their impressive unbeaten away record with a 2-0 lead over the Cops.

And although the Cops bossed possession and dominated proceedings during the match, a Cromwell Rwothomio double either side of the half time break is all that mattered by the final whistle. However, goal keeper Davis Mugabi was at fault for the opening goal after some horror goal keeping.

Police should have had their leveler but Juma Balinnya’s effort hit the bar with James Alitho recovering well to gather Basani Saafi’s rebound. Police kept probing but a fast break at the hour mark down the right allowed Rwothomio to slot home after some brilliant play.

A war of words erupted between URA coach Sam Ssimbwa and Police’s Abdallah Mubiru after the former was sent to the stands by the referee for dissent and improper conduct. But ultimately disappointed with the manner of their defeat.

“Sadly we cannot achieve our season objective because we have failed to kill off games we have dominated like this one. But there is not much we can do because we have just one game to play,” a disappointed Mubiru said after the game.

In Mbarara, champions KCCA picked up maximum points against already relegated Nyamityobora FC. Patrick Kaddu’s double sealed the win for Mike Mutebi’s charges as they await being crowned champions on Saturday at Lugogo.

Dethroned champions Vipers SC also made short work of home side Paidha Black Angels at the Bar Okoro Stadium in Zombo. Abdul Karim Nduggwa’s first half goal was all that separated both teams after 90 minutes.

Express FC picked up their second consecutive  win and third home win of coach George Ssemwogerere’s reign. Ibrahim Kayiwa took his season tally to five goals while Tony Odur made it three before Batega pulled one back for the visitors Bright Stars at the Betway Muteesa II stadium.

In Bombo, heavy rainfall interrupted the game between Ndejje University and Onduparaka at the Arena of Visions and the game was abandoned  with the game rescheduled till tomorrow at 2 pm.

The league will climax on Saturday.
