Archbishop Ntagali: Kiwanda’s Miss Curvy undermines women’s dignity

The Archbishop of Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali has condemned the proposed Miss Curvy Uganda beauty pageant thus calling upon organizers to cancel it.

He says, “It undermines the dignity of women and all that we as a church have worked for to advance girl-child education and opportunities for women to take their part in contributing fully to our national and family development.

The Archbishop further disclosed that the beauty pageant is a disgusting display of exploitation that brings shame to families and Uganda at large.

“The government is promoting trafficking to increase tourism. To present such programme is to demonstrate how low we have fallen as a country. We cannot accept it and we insist that it be cancelled.”

While launching the now controversial Miss Curvy Uganda on Tuesday, State Minister for Tourism Godfrey Kiwanda said the country is ‘endowed with nice looking women who can be used to promote the tourism industry.’

Kiwanda’s initiative has since backfired following an uproar especially from feminists and women activists who have termed it a demeaning factor against women.

However, in defence, the junior Minister has said the concept of Miss Curvy Uganda is no different from other beauty pageants that only celebrate slender and slim women.

According to The Observer newspaper, Kiwanda wonders why the same Ugandans, who almost unanimously celebrated the recent achievements of Miss World Africa Quiin Abenakyo, are now against the Miss Curvy Uganda pageant which also rides on the same concept – but this time on more endowed women.
