LoP Betty Aol labels Speaker Kadaga ‘arrogant’ over COSASE standoff

Aol said that Kadaga has turned parliament into her home where the head makes decisions without being challenged by the subordinates.

Leader of Opposition Betty Aol Ochan has said that speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has handled the parliamentary committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) matters with arrogance.

Mrs Aol while appearing on one of the local news interview on Saturday night said that Kadaga has left no room for the law to work but rather she was bossing around.

“Unless Kadaga stops playing bossy politics, she is risking, taking this matter to another level which is not for the good of people but her personal glory,” said Aol.

Aol also dismissed Kadaga’s argument that, she was working for people.

“Kadaga must understand that we all work for people not her alone, and working for people would not necessarily mean that she would not listen to our argument as she has done,” said Aol.

Aol said that Kadaga has turned parliament into her home where the head makes decisions without being challenged by the subordinates.

“No one is not challenged in parliament, we are challenging her because she is acting against the rules of procedures, yet she is the one to guide us. If we can challenge the president then who is she?” asked Aol.

As a leader of opposition, Aol appointed new COSASE committee headed by Kawempe South lawmaker Mubarak Munyagwa which was supposed to take on the committee leadership on January 13.

However, since the current committee under the leadership of Bugweri lawmaker Abdul Katuntu was handling Bank of Uganda probe into the closure of the seven defunct banks, Kadaga asked for their tenure extension up to the end of next month since the BOU probe was at it’s crucial stage.

The opposition government leadership under Aol has however refused the speaker’s request on basis that whatever the Katuntu’s committee has not completed can be done by the incoming committee.

This forced Kadaga to exercise her powers by making her request into a command.

“I am the speaker of the House; I am the Head of this institution and my proposal is good for the institution.

What we are doing is the work of the people of Uganda, not for parties. COSASE is winding up on the BOU investigation, we expect them to write a report and hand it over to the House before they move,” said Kadaga

Many opposition members have punched holes into Kadaga move and promised on Tuesday this week in the first sitting of the parliament this year, to fight back.
