Police, with the help of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras arrested a teenager suspected of stealing phones from taxi along Entebbe Road.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday at Central Police Station headquarters, Kampala Metropolitan Area police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said that the CCTV footage that went viral on social media early this week alerted Police of the thief and immediately they started looking him.

In this footage a by then suspect who has been identified as Essau Nduhukire is seen on Saturday snatching a mobile phone from the taxi passenger along Entebbe road near Shoprite super market.

“It is because of this footage that we have managed to arrest this suspect. Today our CCTV cameras along Entebbe road, showed us Nduhukire who was back to steal another mobile phone at the same place and we managed to arrest him,” said Oweyesigyire.

According to Oweyesigyire, Nduhukire linked police to where city thieves sell stolen phones.

“Through our interrogations, we were able to establish that these stolen phones are sold to Byamukama Musa,” said Oweyesigyire.

Nduhukire will be arraigned before the court for theft as well as Byamukama for possession of stolen property.

Last year in October President Museveni commissioned in Kampala city and its outskirts CCTV cameras,. While delivering his New Year massage, President Museveni insisted that the CCTV cameras will be very instrumental in fighting criminality in Kampala.

Hamidhu Kazibwa,a bodaboda raider at Shoprite supermarket stage said that CCTV cameras will help to reduce phone stealing.

However, he said police should not follow suspects whose videos have gone viral “Every day mobile phones are stolen on this street before and after CCTV cameras installed but that is the only case we heard, police has to double the effort and save us,” said Kazibwe.
