UPDF and police have said there are not expecting any more survivors of the Saturday fatal boat cruise. Instead, their mission is focusing on rescuing dead bodies from the water.
Security so far has retrieved 25 bodies by Sunday morning but the number of casualties was rising.
On Saturday night, rescue mission was called because the security didn’t have enough equipment to carry out the operation.
Lt Col Deo Akiiki, the deputy spokesman of UPDF said 26 people were saved alive.
It is said the boat had more than 100 people on board and capsized near Mutima beach in Mukono.
The accident has been blamed on poor mechanical conditions of the boat, and overload. One of the survivors told Kampala central MP Nsereko Muhammned that more than 15 people didn’t have life jackets, a mandatory requirement for anyone passenger before boarding the boat.
Of people who survived the ordeal were celebrities including Prince David Wasajja, musicians Irene Namubiru and The Myth, NRM party leader Kiyimba Freeman, and businessman Hope Mukasa.
Speed boats from police and UPDF marines assisted in the rescue mission, backed by Air Force.
