Striking doctors under their umbrella body, Uganda Medical Association (UMA) have lashed out at President Yoweri Museveni who threatened to sack them all.
While addressing a rally in Kabarole District on Thursday, President Museveni said the striking doctors will soon be replaced by people who are hungry for jobs if they fail to use the scarce available resources the country is offering.
“I will not accept Ugandans to die, doctors who don’t want to work will be sacked,” he said.
The Association President Dr Ekwaro Obuku said Museveni’s threats are unfortunate and will not work.
He said though the president is threatening them, he is well aware of the importance of doctors in this social economic transformation.
“The president’s concern shows how important a doctor is in this social economic transformation. Those threats are unfortunate and they will not work. Doctors have had broken promises and they don’t trust the salary review committee. The doctor is unique in the service sector,” said Dr. Obuku.
“Amin issued such threats and there was an exodus. These threats don’t work. The president said he is going to make doctors regret but doctors have been regretting for not holding this strike earlier. Regretting is not new,” he added.
