Four police officers have been charged for torturing Kamwenge Town Council Mayor Godfrey Byamukama.

They were charged with torture at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court on Friday evening.

The charged officers include detectives ASP Patrick Muramira, ASP Fred Tumuhairwe; Habib Roma (driver) and Ben Odeke.

Byamukama’s torture came into public limelight after photos of him showing severe wounds surfaced and went viral.

It is alleged that the suspects took part in torturing Byamukama at Nalufenya Detention facility after being accused of having a hand in the murder of former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

“Together with others still at large, you tortured Mr. Godfrey Byamukama, the mayor of Kamwenge  by  beating him with batons and iron bars on the knees and ankles while arresting  him,” Justice Jameson Karemani read the charges.

The accused applied for a bail but the state prosecutor Nelly Asiku objected saying that the court should be adjourned so that she could verify the ‘big volume’ of documents presented by the sureties.

Justice Karemani concurred with the state prosecutor that the documents had to be verified and adjourned the case to May 30 thus remanding the four police officers to Luzira Prison.
