In a heart-wrenching incident in Kanungu district, the tight-knit community of Kinyabutongo village was left in shock when 30-year-old Bright Turyatunga allegedly took his own life by poisoning. The tragic event unfolded as a result of a tumultuous love affair with Ingabire Sharon, sending ripples in Kyibimbiri parish, Matanda sub-county.

Bright Turyatunga’s relationship with Ingabire Sharon had been marred by complications, and the situation reached its peak on the night of October 22, 2023. Bright made an ill-fated decision to visit Ingabire’s home without her consent, only to be met with a refusal to open the door.

The next morning, on October 23, 2023, at approximately 8:00 AM, the community discovered Bright Turyatunga lying in critical condition within the confines of Ingabire Sharon’s compound. Fearing for his life, community members immediately administered first aid, but their efforts proved to be in vain as Bright passed away on the spot.

According to the Kigezi subregion Police spokesperson Elly Maate, this tragic event was not without warning signs. Bright had previously admitted in writing, before community members, that he would refrain from disturbing Ingabire Sharon by visiting her home.

According to the area chairperson, Deus Owoyesigire, the deceased had made multiple attempts to take his own life, and on October 22, 2023, he had ominously declared his intention to commit suicide.

Kanungu district police promptly responded to the incident, documenting the scene and conducting a postmortem examination. The deceased’s body was then handed over to his grieving relatives for burial arrangements.

As part of their investigation, the police recovered suspected chemical substances, including “fludan,” believed to have been ingested by Bright Turyatunga.
