Mukono Chief Magistrates court has remanded 18 suspects to Luzira and Kauga prisons over defilement charges.
The suspects appeared before the Mukono Grade II Magistrate, Steven Johnson Waiduura for mention of their cases at the request of the magistrate’s court in Lugazi Municipality, Buikwe District on Friday.
These include, Ashiraf Ssempa, Bob Mpalwe, Patrick Wakalugo, Alex Katende, Isa Mukasa, Arafa Ssekayaza, Bashiru Oguti, Javirana Bogere, Frank Nsabwe, Isiman Kasujja and Justus Mukisa. Others are Herbert Osuna, Vicent Ssenyi, Godfrey Othieno, Joseph Kyakulabila, Jimmy Sserwanda, Henry Lubwama, and Isaac Wasunkundi.
The accused persons are residents of various villages in Buikwe district. Waiduura read to each of the accused details of their indictment handed to him by the state attorney, Shebah Kyalisiima who informed the court that investigations into the matter were complete. She asked the court to commit the suspects to the High court for trial.
Waiduura committed each of the suspects to Mukono High court, which has jurisdiction to hear capital offences. The suspects were each charged with defilement contrary to section 129 of the Penal Code Act. According to the Act, any person who performs a sexual act with another person who is below the age of eighteen years commits a felony known as defilement and is on conviction liable to life imprisonment.
