Police in Nebbi district has arrested Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s Robert Onega and beaten up his supporters in a bid to curtail an election petition celebration.

This follows the nullification of the election and victory of Hashim Sulaiman as Member of Parliament for Nebbi Municipality.

Sulaiman was announced the winner in the Nebbi Municipality race after defeating Onega by a margin of 124 votes.

Through his lawyer Erias Lukwago, Onega accused Sulaiman – who subscribes to the ruling National Resistance Movement  – of conniving with the Electoral Commission to disable the biometric machines that were to be used at every polling station in order to allow even non registered people to vote

“The main points here are the glaring irregularities during the conduct of the election which included falsification of results to the extent of over turning his victory,” Lukwago told court in March.

Justice Anthony Ojuko Ojok subsequently ordered for a by-election in Nebbi Municipality.
