Government ordered to compensate shs200m to tortured prisoner

Mukono High Court Judge Margaret Mutonyi has ordered government to compensate a prisoner who was tortured by a prison guard to the extent of breaking his back.

Henry Mulooki,25 a resident of Buvuma was sentenced to Luzira prison in 2012 after being convicted for marrying a 13 year old girl.

While serving his sentence, Mulooki was transferred to Kitalya prison in Mityana and while working on a garden in 2014, he was severely beaten by a prison warden known as Otim who snapped his spine.

After sustaining a severe injury, Mulooki taken to Murchison Bay hospital in Luzira prison where he has spent two years on treatment.

Delivering her judgement, Justice Mutonyi revealed that Mulooki was tortured by Otim thus ordering government to properly treat the victim as well as giving him shs200 million as compensation for the pain and torture Mulooki has passed through.
