Kadaga: Uganda’s prolonged covid-19 lockdown is becoming meaningless

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has asked the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda to present an evaluation report on the Covid-19 ever since the country went into lockdown in March 2020.

Kadaga made the request on Tuesday while presiding over the Plenary where she said that the continuous lockdown in the country is no longer having any meaning since it’s making lives of Ugandans more miserable than Covid-19.

She said “I really want the government to be more serious with this issue of Covid-19. Can’t we just learn to live with it? And just organise our society to manage it. How long is this Covid going to continue? I think it is important to guide our people to live within the situation.”

Kadaga added that the continuous lockdown of two months, five months, seven months may become a problem both within the government and in the societies of the country and asked responsible ministers to keenly bundle the matter of lockdown.

“I think we need an evaluation of this lockdown, the country needs an evaluation of the lockdown. So that we can know how to move on. This kind of keeping people in suspense is not right. So Prime minister I think you should arrange and give us an evaluation so that we discuss it here in the House.” she said.

Currently there over 1040 total cases and 984 recoveries.

On the same note, she also summoned Minister of Finance Matia Kasaija to come and explain to the House today on why some government institutions have not paid their workers yet Parliament passed supplementary budgets to support payments of civil servants.

She added that despite all the efforts to approve the supplementary budget for a number of agencies, her office has continuously received complaints from the Uganda Police Force that they have not received their money.

“I also continue to receive reports from the Health sector that a number of health workers have not been paid their allowances. Last week, we received similar concerns from the Uganda Virus Research Institute. The Ministers of Finance should tell Parliament what happened because we passed the supplementary and appropriated the money. Because we expect that the money should have gone where it is supposed to go,” she said.
