The Legal Director for the Anti counterfeit Network Counsel Fred Muwema has revealed that most of the products in the Ugandan supermarkets are counterfeit.

This was during a media breakfast which took place at Protea Hotel in Kampala as the Anti Counterfeit Network Africa unveiled a new television programme centered on the counterfeit pandemic in Africa and finding ways to fight the vice.

Muwema gave an example of the Johnson baby powder which has internationally been blocked from the markets but again found in Ugandan Super Markets and citizens are comfortably buying it.

Muwema said a disease like counterfeit needs much concentration to make sure it is wiped out completely.

“60% of the supermarket products are counterfeit as NBS revealed to us” said Muwema.

He went ahead to note that in order to fight this vice, even the media must change the way it does its reporting.

“Media should concentrate on important stories instead of critics” noted Muwema.

At the same function, the guest of honor Ruhunda Alex, the Member of Parliament for Fort Portal Municipality and chairperson of the committee of tourism, trade and cooperatives said that many Ugandans are good at pointing out problems but are very poor at finding solutions to these problems.

On this note he advised the Uganda Counterfeit Network to concentrate on skilling Ugandans on how to fight these counterfeits.

The Anti –Counterfeit Network is a private sector Organization, which aims to bridge the intervention gaps between the multiple stakeholders  that affect and are affected by counterfeits and parallel importation.
