The school of law at the University of Makerere on Wednesday called for mass discussions between government and the population, regarding the proposed land amendment bill.
Speaking to the press at the university, Dr. Zahara Nampewo a lawyer and a lecturer at the school of law urged the government to quickly take steps towards the engagement of the locals in deliberations on the controversial land amendment bill.
She stressed that land is the most valuable resource that the locals are left with and called upon all Ugandans to vehemently reject the bill.
“Land is the only resource people are left with, they use it for cultivation, burying their dead beloved ones,” said Dr. Zahara.
The University has strongly rejected several constitutional amendments, for instance on October 28th, the university committee rejected the invitation by the parliament to deliberate the controversial presidential age limit lifting.
On 15th September, human rights groups called for a national referendum, such that the Ugandan population expresses its position on the land amendment bill.
The proposed land amendment bill which seeks to give government powers to forcefully evict land owners without instant compensation provoked a wide criticism from the general public.
Many have described it as a ploy by the government officials to entrench land grabbing in the prefix of investment.
