Public Service Institutions In Uganda should Plan for Imminent Strikes

By Prof Venansius Baryamureeba

For sometime, government has been troubleshooting salaries of public servants/ officers. The salary disparities in the pubic sector are strikingly worrying. In some public institutions a driver earns 5 times the salary of senior consultant in Mulago National Referral Hospital. Even some drivers in public institutions with just O-level certificate earn more than a Professor in a University. So, should doctors’ strike surprise us. More underpaid public servants will follow soon.

Even Members of Parliament whose academic qualification requirement is a minimum of A level recently increased their pay to at least 25M per month. As if this was not enough, I am reliably informed that their per diem is now USD 800 per day. Consultants in government hospitals don’t even earn USD 800 per month.

What is government rewarding?

Without an effect and independent national salary and remuneration commission that can set and review salaries and allowances of all public servants/ officers, Uganda is headed for doomsday.
