Mama Janet Museveni’s recent message during the 7th Annual Youth Convention, urging the youth to resist the temptation of leaving Uganda in search of greener pastures, could not have come at a more crucial time. With thousands of young Ugandans departing for foreign countries every year, the First Lady’s call is a reminder that success lies not in fleeing from challenges, but in finding purpose and working diligently to improve the country that God has placed us in.
Mama’s call resonates deeply with timeless biblical principles and practical wisdom. The Bible tells us in the book of Acts 17:26 that God determined the times set for us (all humans) and the exact places where we should live. This powerful scripture affirms that nothing in our lives is random—not our birthplaces, the families we are born into, or the environments in which we grow up. God, in His infinite wisdom, has placed each of us in Uganda for a purpose. The country we live in is not a mistake but part of a divine plan. God has equipped us with everything we need to thrive where we are.
The challenge for the youth is to understand this deeper truth: that Uganda, with all its challenges, is the place where God has positioned them to fulfill their potential. In her speech, Mama Janet Museveni eloquently addressed the pressing issue of youth migration, encouraging young Ugandans to contribute to the development of their homeland rather than seeking so-called greener pastures abroad. This message could not be more relevant today. Many of those who venture out in search of better opportunities often find themselves in environments where they are undervalued, exploited, and, in some cases, treated as modern-day slaves. This is not the destiny God intends for His people. Freedom, purpose, and growth are the hallmarks of a life lived in alignment with God’s will.
As Mama Janet rightly pointed out, the countries that young Ugandans admire were built by the hard work and sacrifice of their own citizens. These nations did not become prosperous overnight, and their achievements are the result of generations of dedication. It is easy to admire other countries and believe that success can only be found abroad. However, as Mama Janet reminded us, those nations were built through the dedication and hard work of their own citizens. Similarly, Uganda’s future lies in the hands of her youth. Uganda has the potential for great success if her youth commit to developing their talents and using the abundant resources available within the country.
God has gifted each person with unique abilities, and He has positioned each of us in specific places to fulfill His purpose. The solution to the struggles many face is not to flee, but to seek God’s purpose and plan right where they are. As Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Uganda’s youth should trust that God’s plan includes the development of their nation, and through diligence and perseverance, they can play a significant role in its growth.
Running away from Uganda might seem like the easiest route, but it often leads to enslavement—both figuratively and literally. God does not want His children enslaved. In fact, true success comes not from seeking material wealth in foreign lands, but from discovering and serving a higher purpose using the gifts and talents God has bestowed on each of us. Uganda, with all its challenges, also offers immense opportunities for those who are willing to see beyond the obstacles and invest in their God-given potential.
Mama Janet’s call is a timely reminder that Uganda’s future lies not in the hands of foreign employers, but in the hearts of her own people—especially the youth. It is they who will build the nation, brick by brick, with the creativity, intelligence, and strength God has placed within them. Uganda needs its patriotic youth now more than ever, and it is up to them to rise to the challenge, trusting in God’s purpose and provision for their lives.
Mama’s message should be a wake-up call for all Ugandans. The solution is not to run but to stay, build, and prosper in the land God has given us. With faith, hard work, and unity, Uganda can and will rise to greatness. Let us heed the First Lady’s advice and commit ourselves to building our nation with the resources God has provided, knowing that we are right where we are meant to be.
