Barbara Nekesa Oundo, the National Treasurer of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has called on the people of Busoga to trash sugarcane farming for more diversified forms of commercial agriculture, highlighting that depending on sugarcane has led to food insecurity in many homes.
While addressing residents at Bwamba village in Luuka District, during the third coronation ceremony of clan leader Mr. Bakibisemu Stephen, Nekesa pointed out that sugarcane growing is better suited for those with large expanses of land.
She encouraged smaller landholders to embrace a broader range of agricultural activities that are more lucrative and sustainable.
“I advise you to leave sugarcane farming to those with more extensive land. Instead, engage in commercial agriculture and avoid fragmenting your land. Also, it’s crucial to secure your land ownership by obtaining proper titles,” Nekesa stressed.
At the same event, Don Vincent Bwana, the Head of Protocol in NRM and a parliamentary aspirant for Luuka South, appealed to President Museveni to honor his commitment to further modernize seed schools in the district to enhance the education sector.
He also mentioned the government’s approval to pave the Walugogo-Luuka-Kamuli road, with Waibuga Sub-county Chairperson Mr. Kayong Salim confirming that compensation for affected landowners has started, beginning from Kamuli to Nakabugu.
