Bukoto South Member of Parliament, Dr. Twaha Kagabo, has officially announced his decision to leave the National Unity Platform (NUP) and join the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), following General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s recent announcement to withdraw his bid for the presidency in 2026. General Muhoozi, leader and founder of the Patriotic League of Uganda(PLU), endorsed President Yoweri Museveni and urged PLU members to align themselves with the NRM.
Kagabo, who was previously a staunch supporter and member of the PLU, confirmed that he will not return to NUP, the party that supported his entry into Parliament during the 2021 elections. Instead, he plans to seek the NRM card, emphasizing the alignment of NRM’s objectives with those of the PLU. “Yes, I will. I’m joining a party that has objectives that are close to those of PLU,” Kagabo said, affirming his decision to follow Muhoozi’s directive.
Addressing concerns about whether this shift could affect his popularity among his constituents, Kagabo compared politics to a game, saying, “Politics is like any other game. The communities focus on your accomplishments and capabilities. The most important thing is continuing to play the game and serve people.”
Kagabo’s move came in the wake of what NUP termed a “betrayal” after he and several other opposition members sided with Muhoozi’s PLU. His departure from NUP raises questions about the future of other PLU members and supporters following Muhoozi’s decision to stand down and endorse President Museveni.
As Kagabo joins the NRM, his future political journey will be closely watched, especially as he navigates his relationship with his constituents in Bukoto South.
