Three suspected cattle thieves have been burnt alive in Kahangi parish in Hakibale sub-county in Kabarole district. Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West Region police spokesperson, says that residents pursued the unidentified suspects from Kyenjojo district and intercepted them in Hakibale sub-county.

According to Police, community members first stoned the suspects before torching them and the vehicle they were travelling in on Thursday morning. Twesige says that police are hunting for a number of people who are believed to have participated in the mob justice.

“We have warned people to stop engaging in mob justice but in vain. When you kill suspects before they are brought to the police for interrogation you make it hard for police to obtain information, which is always useful to stop criminal acts,” Twesige revealed.

Police say animal theft in the region is on the rise and call on the public to remain vigilant.
