Ruhinda North Member of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has been elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Tayebwa, the NRM flagbearer got 379 votes to defeat opposition’s Moses Okot p’Bitek who got 82 votes.
The election happened on Friday at Kololo Independence grounds, Kampala.
Tayebwa until his new role, has been serving as Government Chief Whip.
Earlier today, the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament, Anita Among emerged winner for the position of Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
Among, the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament got 401 votes to defeat Bugiri Municipality legislator Asuman Basalirwa who got 66 votes.
The Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo declared Rt. Hon. Anitah Among as the new and duly elected Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, replacing the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah who passed away last Sunday in Seattle, USA where he had gone to receive specialised treatment.
In her acceptance speech, Among promised not to be Speaker for any political party but for the whole of Uganda.
“I’ll be a Speaker for the whole Uganda and everybody, not for the party (NRM). I pledge to support all members of Parliament in their respective constituencies for you to remain in Parliament,”she said.
