Uganda Police have said that 15 suspects have been arrested in connection to the ongoing murders in Greater Masaka region.
Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, the force’s spokesperson Fred Enanga said the arrested people are among those individuals that are being suspected of murdering people in Masaka for the past four weeks.
“In Masaka district we have six people these include; Kwalya Yazin, Sserwada Mike, Muwonge Jude, Nakakawa Sylvia, Kibedi Yowana Batista and Jemba Francis. These one are suspected to have contributed to the murder of 9 people in Masaka and these murders include Mukasa Idris 89 years a resident of Kikungwe who was murdered on 22nd this month, the next Mugerwa Forensics aged 58 from another village was also murder, Kakooza Sulaiman 54 years was murdered by cutting his head several times, Nampijja Muhangaza 75 years was also murder while at home in Kasaliro preparing her supper. Yeya Peter a casual worker at Bisanje village was also attacked and killed, the next day Mulindwa Madi 45 years was murdered, Nakato Mariam 80 was also killed,”Enanga noted.
He added that in the Lwengo district alone 9 people have been so far arrested in connection with the murder of 17 people in the district alone. These include Kibilongo John Bosco commonly known as Boy, Ssewankambo Muhamad, Namata Justine, Kabayo Henry, Kaganda Moses, Ssebunya Isa, Mutabazi Batista, Ngabilano Sebastian and Kayihura Joseph.
“While interrogating them, they have shown us how they have been indulging themselves in such acts of killing. The 9 were selected from 68 suspects who had been arrested in a move to fight against the killing of people.”
The arrests come at the time when the Police Political Commissar Asan Kasingye and Minister for Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda plan to visit the region to ascertain the cause of the murders and forge a way forward.
Kasingye is expected to camp in the region to give support to police operations while Minister Babalanda’s visit is slated for Thursday.
While at CBS FM on Monday morning Minister Babalanda said that the regional police already have an operational plan but they are going to support it with among other deployments of more manpower by establishing a platoon at every Sub County.
“The officers will be coming from our Field Force Unit (FFU) and supporting the visibility of police through more vehicles, motorcycles and logistics.”
Although security was beefed up in the region over the weekend,assailants managed to kill four people in Lwengo Masaka, Rakai and Kyotera districts.
The deceased were identified as Henry Kiremba 81, Maria Nakato 80, Silivan Ssekalaala 32, and Sulaight Ssekanjako.
