Police has warned musician turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine not to prove the security force by holding any consultation meeting before presenting to them the 10 strategies they agreed upon recently.
Kyagulanyi, the People Power movement leader also aspiring presidential candidate was supposed to hold his consultation meetings starting Monday 24th February at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel. However, he has been denied by police which deployed heavily at the hotel premises today morning.
According to the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, he wrote to police seeking clearance to resume his consultations which were blocked last month in seven districts, however, they kept on tossing him left and right.
“Having paid for the venue and done everything else required of us by the law, police did not respond within the 48 hours as required of them. After we addressed a press conference and pledged to continue with our preparations, they wrote to us indicating that they are not clearing the event,”Bobi Wine said last week.
However, on Monday during a press conference held at Police Headquarters in Naguru, the force’s Deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye cautioned Bobi Wine not to provoke them by violating the modalities which they agreed on while in the meeting with the Electoral Commission.
” As you are aware Hon Kyagulanyi had proposed to restart his consultative meetings in Kampala today but we would like to affirm to all presidential aspirants to always cooperate with Police in ensuring violence-free consultative meetings. During the meeting that was held at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala Hon Kyagulanyi and his team proposed to submit 10 strategies that would be followed to ensure a peaceful and no repeat of lawlessness like we previously witnessed in Kasangati, ” Namaye said.
Adding, “However these strategies have not been submitted to Police as it had been agreed on 31 January 2020 and 18th Feb 2020 the director of operations wrote to Hon Kyagulanyi reminding him to submit in those proposals but this has not been done. So the Police still awaits for his reply and because of their none compliance to submit in their 10 strategies as it has been agreed they will be no any consultative meeting.”
However, Kyagulanyi alludes that by allowing him carry out his meetings is the only way the Electoral Commission can show its credibility that it will preside over a free and fair election in 2021 by reigning over all government agencies to ensure leveled political field for all political players in the country.
